How to set up a litter box cleanup station

Give the scoop, bags and mat a place of their own so you can tidy the litter box without hunting for supplies.

Leave room around the box

Start with the litter box where it is. You can set up a cleanup spot without moving the box. Ohio State’s Indoor Pet Initiative recommends a quiet location and an easy path for your cat to reach it. Before adding storage, check that the cat can still walk up to the box and step out without going around a bin or basket.

Try standing or kneeling where you normally scoop. Leave enough room to move the scoop and hold a bag open. If the box is in a narrow nook, keep the supplies on a nearby shelf rather than squeezing them beside it.

Give the scoop and bags separate spots

Put the scoop in a small tray or a holder where you can grab it with one hand. Keep unused bags in a separate spot so you can pull one out without moving the scoop. A tray and a box you already have are enough to try the setup. There’s no need to buy a cart to see whether the layout works.

Keep a few bags at the station and put the rest with your spare litter. If the shelf is shared, label the two spots so anyone who scoops knows where things go.

Make the mat easy to pick up

If you use a mat, set it flat where your cat usually steps out. Leave an edge you can grab without lifting the box or moving the supply tray. If you have to pull everything apart to get to the mat, try turning it or using a smaller one.

Keep the cleanup spot small. If a brush and dustpan are already nearby, leave them there rather than making room for a second set. Put only the things you reach for often at the station.

Tie scooping to something you do daily

Cornell’s Feline Health Center recommends removing waste and clumps daily if you use clumping litter. Pick a regular cue, such as after dinner. Get a bag ready, scoop the box and return the scoop to its holder. If you notice loose litter on the mat, pick up the mat and empty it before putting it back.

When you open the last roll of bags, add bags to your shopping list. After a few days, notice which step still sends you looking for something. Move that supply before adding more storage.
